gravy with xanthan gum

Most gravy recipes are made using flour as a gravy thickener. These gravies are delicious and easy to make, but maybe you have no flour, don’t want to use it in your gravy at the moment or you’ve gone keto, low carb, or gluten-free. In any of these cases, you need a good flour alternative for your gravy recipe.

This is where my tasty xanthan gum gravy comes into play. It is a simple recipe, made with just 5 ingredients but it is perfect to use as a substitute for gravy without flour.

I’ll show you how to make it in no time at all!

Ingredients for xanthan gum gravy

  • Butter – Used to add richness and creaminess to the gravy
  • Beef broth – Any kind of broth can work here including chicken broth or vegetable broth. Even a homemade broth made with 2 cups of water with 2 bullion cubes mixed in can work.
  • Garlic powder – Used to add some flavor. You can use some fresh garlic paste or garlic flakes as a substitute.
  • Xanthan gum – Xanthan gum is a food additive used to thicken and stabilize foods. In this recipe, it is used as an effective flour substitute for gravy
  • Salt and pepper, to taste – These two ingredients will help the gravy come together.

How to make gravy with xanthan gum

To make this flourless gravy, start by gathering all your ingredients in one place.

In a saucepan, combine the butter, beef broth, and garlic powder.

Next, mix the xanthan gum into the butter and beef broth mixture.

To do this and prevent lumpy xanthan gum, sprinkle the xanthan gum into the simmering liquid and stir so everything comes together nicely.

Also, season to taste with salt and pepper.

Then cook the gravy over medium-high heat and let it simmer for about 3-5 minutes while the liquid reduces and the gravy thickens up.

Remove this thick flourless gravy from the heat and serve as desired.

This gravy recipe can be stored in the fridge in an air-tight container for up to four days. Then reheat it when you’re ready to use it.

If you want to freeze the gravy, store it properly and place it in the freezer for up to four months.
